of choice when selecting a broadband provider
is a right that should not be restricted by profit
considerations at the phone company. Monopolies
not only result in higher costs for the consumer,
but also stimulate poor service and functionality.
We should not resign ourselves to accept what
the telephone company offers.
The internet has become a communications channel
as important or more so than the press. A study
by SBC indicated
that 78% of internet users would prefer a broadband
connection to the daily newspaper. Broadband also
promotes the educational development of the population
using new methodologies. In the SBC study over
71% of the people interviewed indicated they were
considering long distance learning or e-learning.
E-learning is not practical without a broadband
connection. E-learning not only makes it possible
that people learn but also creates a new industry
for companies in the education area that want
to participate in this global market.
The availability of broadband connections at
low prices is important in the development of
Puerto Rico. By restricting freedom of choice,
the phone company is limiting the growth of the
market and prevents Puerto Rico from reaching
a leadership position.
The experience in other countries is compelling
in that a clear government policy stimulates the
development of a communications infrastructure
that is at the vanguard of the industry. Martin
Luther King, Jr. said "Injustice anywhere
is a threat to justice everywhere". Don't
allow the phone company to continue blocking our
choices. Join our efforts
to create awareness of this problem with your
legislators and visit
